PUBLIC AWARENESS AND ADVOCACY WORK

Nisaa engages in very innovative campaigns that raise awareness amongst the general public and selected groups on the different forms and implications of gender based violence and its link to HIV and AIDS. Over the years, some of Nisaa's more successful campaigns include:

• The very controversial and well know Bus Campaign with the message 'You are only half a man if you rape a woman'

  • A White Ribbon Campaign that went national and was taken to two other African countries as well.

  • The Red and White Ribbon Campaign that informs communities about the interface between gender based violence and HIV and AIDS.

  • In November 2001 Nisaa introduced a Radio Drama Programme on domestic violence that went out on Ligwalagwala Radio Station reaching listeners locally, nationally and in some of the SADC countries. This programme was modified into a training programme where community radio personnel were trained in the production of their own radio drama programmes on gender based violence.

  • Date Rape Campaign in 2002.

  • In 2008 Nisaa reverted to radio and have produced 30 pre-packaged radio programmes called Change the Tune. Change the Tune focuses on a number of topics relating to gender and gender based violence ranging from "Single Parenting" to '"Attack on black Lesbians"

  • Nisaa also ran a Consent is Sexy Taxi Campaign which was later modified and piloted as a sexual rights awareness campus campaign called "Consent is Sexy"
